Band has been very different this year following Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions. Mr. Watkins, HHS band director, has had to adjust his teaching to fit the new guidelines for his students.
Mr. Watkins hopes to go over two units this year, which is one less than last year. He also stated that COVID has stopped the marching band from traveling and competing. Colorguard, however, has been competing virtually with hopes of being able to do so in person by March.
Watkins also talked about how this school year was very difficult, even stating that students must wear instrument covers, which allows the minimal amount of air to be spread throughout the classroom. This is a safety regulation due to the circumstances of the pandemic.
Watkins explained he was devastated to hear that the seniors’ year would be cut short. He said “I think they’re heartbroken because they won’t be able to compete again,” and that he and his leaders “are trying our best to honor them the best we could, and we are doing a couple of things in addition to marching band for the seniors.”
