Cobra Kai Review

By: Ty Smith

Cobra Kai is a spinoff from the original Karate Kid series. The first season was released on May 1, 2018. Originally it was a Youtube Red exclusive, where the first two seasons were released, then Netflix acquired the series in June 2020. The most recent 3rd season was released on New Years Day 2021.

Cobra Kai takes place 34 years after the originally Karate Kid film, but this time, coming from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view. (Johnny Lawrence is the guy that got crane kicked at the end of the movie.) He decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo which leads to the rekindling of his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso (the original Karate Kid).

It was almost odd how much I liked this series, considering I never found the original that interesting. The show creates an interesting perspective about how much nature and nurture influence each other. Though Johnny Lawrence is technically the main character, the writers did a great job fleshing out the supporting cast. Every character has a fulfilling arc and it keeps the show interesting during places where the story is not progressing. Overall it’s a great series and I would recommend it to anybody. You don’t need to know much about the original series to follow the story so it’s fairly easy to follow.
